Woburn, MA, July 21, 2004 -SensAble Technologies, Inc.®, a leading provider of 3D touch-enabled digital solutions for commercial software development, academic and commercial research, and product design, today announced that the company has lowered the U.S. MSRP for its PHANTOM® Omni™ Developer Kit, which includes the PHANTOM Omni haptic device and new OpenHaptics™ toolkit, from $3,900 to $1,950. For a limited time, entrants in the SensAble™ 3D Touch™ Developer Challenge, also announced today, can purchase the same PHANTOM Omni Developer Kit for just $800. Volume pricing under $1,000 per unit is also available for OEM deployment units.
"The new mission of SensAble includes making haptics technology accessible for a broader range of applications and ultimately helping developers create more compelling and immersive user experiences," said Curt Rawley, Chairman and CEO of SensAble Technologies. "By offering the combination of our PHANTOM Omni haptic device and our new OpenHaptics toolkit at an unprecedented price, we are enabling commercial software developers to integrate the dimension of touch into new or existing applications in a way never before possible."
Toolkit based on the OpenGL API moves haptics beyond scientific research to commercial deployment
The new SensAble OpenHaptics toolkit, which is scheduled to ship in August 2004, moves haptics beyond the limits of scientific research to practical commercial deployment. Using the toolkit, software developers can add the sense of touch and true 3D navigation to a broad range of applications, including 3D design and modeling, medical, games, entertainment, visualization, and simulation. The toolkit is patterned after the OpenGL API, making it familiar to graphics programmers, and facilitates reuse of OpenGL code and integration with OpenGL applications.
The toolkit's ease-of-use was demonstrated in a recent development project at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, an early beta tester of the new OpenHaptics toolkit.
According to Georges Grinstein, Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Institute for Visualization and Perception Research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, "Our student programmers knew virtually nothing about haptics; but, within just a few days, we were programming with the toolkit and several PHANTOM Omni devices. Within 10 weeks, we had created a novel musical experience integrating haptics, graphics, and digital sound to produce playable instruments and scores."
The UMASS Lowell application will be demonstrated, along with other haptic-enabled applications at the SensAble booth #1125 at SIGGRAPH, Los Angeles Convention Center, August 10-12, 2004.
The current version of the SensAble OpenHaptics toolkit supports Microsoft® Windows® XP and 2000. Future support for the Linux® and Macintosh® platforms is planned.
