Woburn, MA, February 18, 2004 - SensAble Technologies, Inc., announced today the immediate availability of the GHOST® SDK v4.0 - Linux Update Feb-04. This new update works with SensAble's PHANTOM® Premium and PHANTOM® Desktop™ haptic devices and provides support for Red Hat® Linux® 9, Red Hat® Fedora™ Core 1, and SUSE LINUX 9.0. The expanded platform support enables more Linux developers to create haptically enabled applications.
"We're seeing growing interest in the Linux platform within the haptic community", said Bob Steingart, Vice President of Marketing, "and in response to that interest, we want to provide our customers with a current software tool kit for Linux and a range of haptic devices that are ideal for research and commercial applications. A significant benefit of the new update is that it provides compatibility with new applications and libraries compiled with the GCC 3.x compilers.
The GHOST® SDK (General Haptic Open Software Toolkit) is a powerful, C++ software tool kit that eases the task of developing touch-enabled applications. The GHOST SDK works as the "physics of touch" engine, which takes care of the complex computations and allows developers to deal with simple, high-level objects and physical properties like location, mass, friction, and stiffness. Developers can use GHOST's libraries of 3D prismatic objects, polygonal objects, and touch effects to add a convincingly physical dimension to a variety of applications including medical simulation, virtual training, geophysics, robotics, teleoperations, assembly path planning, molecular modeling, and nano-manipulation. At the same time, GHOST's flexible, extensible architecture makes it a powerful platform for haptics researchers and other developers who need to add new shapes and dynamics, as well as implement lower-level, direct-force effects.
The GHOST SDK v4.0 - Linux Update Feb-04 is currently available for Red Hat Linux 9, Red Hat Fedora Core 1, and SUSE LINUX 9.0. SensAble's SDK for Linux customers who are on maintenance, will automatically receive this update. The GHOST SDK is also available for Windows® XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT.
