Woburn, MA, March 25, 2002 - SensAble Technologies, Inc., announced today the immediate availability of FreeForm Version 5, the latest release of the touch-based modeling system. Modeling with touch allows companies who create products characterized by highly organic forms to move from traditional, physical processes to a completely digital production process without sacrificing design quality and artisanship. Version 5 speeds the creation of production-ready models and further extends the FreeForm system's ease-of-use.

The FreeForm modeling system enables companies to completely transform the way they develop products. By providing a touch-enabled interface to a digital modeling tool, users can very quickly create complex forms that previously could only be made by hand. These digital forms can then be used directly in standard downstream processes such as rapid prototyping, tooling design and CNC machining, allowing companies to dramatically reduce time-to-market.

Version 5 enhancements, improvements and features include:

  • A powerful new Round Edge tool that allows users to add numerically precise radii with a simple swipe along an edge.
  • A new automatic draft option for the Wire Cut tool that ensures model features can be easily manufactured.
Import/export enhancements that help smooth the integration of FreeForm modeling with other complementary tools, such as CAD, color scanners and color "3D printers."
  • Improved measurement tools that help users maintain and confirm the integrity of design criteria, such as minimum edge radii, piece-to-piece clearances and thicknesses.
  • Haptic guides that leverage the advantage of modeling with touch by allowing users to perform precise modeling actions in an intuitive way.
  • More efficient memory handling that enables larger, more detailed models.

Christopher Pardell, renowned sculptor at The Van Group stated, "The FreeForm system enables me to carry my 23 years of professional sculpting experience and technique into virtual space taking full advantage of the skills of a traditionally trained sculptor. With Version 5 SensAble has doubled the efficiency of the FreeForm system - it is more responsive and capable of resolutions an order of magnitude finer. The haptic aides have also been significantly improved as they are now as elegantly effortless to use as the tools they affect."

Chris Petersen, Manager CAD/CAM Dept. at Michigan-based Wolverine Worldwide, a leading global designer and marketer of footwear states, "FreeForm Version 5 has many new features that will greatly enhance our CAD department's ability to create our products quicker and more accurately. It also improves our compatibility with Wolverine's current CAD software."

According to Tom Ellery, General Manager for SensAble's Concept Realization Team, "FreeForm Version 5 has enabled our customers to move beyond modeling complex forms. Now, customers can simultaneously sculpt and send for electronic marketing approvals, while Asian tooling partners provide manufacturing recommendations on the digital clay files during the design phase. This digital process transformation is having substantial business impact on how companies bring products to market."

The FreeForm system is sold in two packages. FreeForm Version 5 offers a full suite of touch-based modeling tools. FreeForm Plus Version 5 adds advanced design tools for creating precise features, deforming models and exporting models as NURB surfaces. The system runs on Windows NT and Windows 2000.
