Cambridge MA, December 10, 1999 - It wasn't enough to give FreeForm™ modeling an Innovation Award- Computer Graphics World editors went a step further by creating a new category, the first ever Grand Innovation Award, for SensAble's revolutionary new touch-enabled modeling system.

Each year since the award's inception in 1994, Computer Graphics World editors have chosen products from hundreds of nominations for Innovation Awards. According to Phil LoPiccolo, Editor-in-Chief of Computer Graphics World, "FreeForm modeling is well-deserving of the Grand Innovation Award. It embodies the true spirit of the awards by extending the frontier of visual computing." Computer Graphics World will feature the latest Innovation Award winners in the January 2000 issue. The product at the center of the attention is the FreeForm modeling system, which launched this past August at Siggraph. Based on SensAble's 3D Touch™ technology, the FreeForm system blends the intuitiveness and expressiveness of physical modeling with the power and productivity of digital modeling. Its tools use familiar, physical metaphors, such as sculpting and wire cutting, which work in a direct and obvious manner. Controlling these tools through touch gives users an unprecedented connection to their model. "Intent" flows directly into the digital form, and any type of nuance or gesture can be faithfully captured. Direct model interaction and familiar tools help eliminate the months-long learning curve typically needed to master 3D modeling software. As a result, the well-known productivity benefits of digital modeling can now be applied to a variety of modeling challenges previously beyond the capabilities of computer software.
The FreeForm system includes the PHANTOM™ Desktop interface hardware and FreeForm modeling software. It runs on Pentium-based Windows NT workstations.
